First Dentist Trip: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3!

At Great Grins Children’s Dentistry, we train our team to work with children. There are also some simple ways to ensure your infant has a great first dentist trip. To prepare, just remember these three easy steps!

1. Begin by holding your child in your lap with their head in another person’s lap. This will help your baby practice this position before the dental appointment.
2. Then, gently wash your child’s mouth and gums with a wash cloth or infant toothbrush.
3. Finally, remember to remain calm so that your little one will be happy, too!

As pediatric dentists, we know little ones can be unpredictable. Even the most prepared child can get overwhelmed and cry. However, if you show that you’re stressed, it will make it harder to calm your child down as well. We are here to help you and your child relax and be as comfortable as possible throughout the exam.

Because babies’ needs are very different from an adults’, it is important to find a pediatric dentist for your little one. This will also help them when they are children and then teenagers! Kid’s Dentistry in Tucson AZ: Dental Laser for Kids

Kid’s dentistry is constantly evolving. There are new techniques that help dentists take better care of your teeth while minimizing discomfort. As technology improves, your children’s dentist in Tucson finds new ways to provide a better experience for your child. Some improvements we’ll be seeing in the coming years include:

Laser Dentistry

Dental lasers use water and light technology to improve the patient experience. Also known as “no-shot” dentistry, it allows for little to no anesthetics! Dental lasers are so precise that there is less trauma to surrounding areas. There is less bleeding and swelling. One of the best parts is that there is no vibration, pressure, or heat from a drill when the laser is used alone!

Dr. Wolfman and Dr. Lele at Great Grins Children’s Dentistry like to stay up-to-date with technology improvements. Because of this, they use laser dentistry. As a result, our patients have a better experience in our office! We are happy to offer a service that not only allows for more precise work, but also gives our patients peace of mind.

New Anesthetics

Another aspect that we could see improve is the use of anesthetics. This will come in handy at the children’s dentist in Tucson, since milder sedatives will allow for faster recovery. The idea is to make major surgeries as comfortable as possible for those involved without adding to the risk of the procedure.

Dr. Angela Wolfman and Dr. Kedar Lele are both Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Healthy Teeth: Tips From a Kid’s Dentist

Who doesn’t want healthy teeth? We all want our children to have good oral health. Taking care of our babies’ teeth is a great way to prevent cavities and dental injuries. Read on to learn some tips from our Tucson pediatric dentists. You can also visit this page by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for some frequently asked questions and their answers!

Healthy Teeth: Supervise Brushing

Supervise your children’s brushing until they are old enough to brush properly. Even when they are able to brush by themselves, double check to make sure all areas were cleaned. This will help ensure that they are not using too much toothpaste, swallowing toothpaste, or skipping flossing. Stress the importance of brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. One way to encourage healthy teeth is by getting a fun toothbrush and toothpaste.

Mouth Guards

Always make your child wears a mouth guard when participating in a contact sport. This will help protect the mouth and could save you hundreds of dollars in dental work! Custom mouth guards work best because they are formed to your child’s mouth. Mouth guards can provide much needed protection.

Regular Check Ups

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your baby visit a dentist no later than age one or six months after their first tooth erupts. After the first visit, your child should see a dentist every six months. This will ensure a lifetime of healthy teeth and cavity prevention! Make dental visits a routine for your child so that they know the importance. They may even come to like visiting the dentist if it is a fun, kid’s office.

Misconceptions About the Dentist

We all have some ideas about going to the dentist. There can be some common misconceptions that we hear from friends or family members, or maybe on the internet. Children have their own thoughts about dental appointments. In many cases, children have an idea of what to expect at the dentist. For first visits, they may be nervous thinking about bad experiences or misconceptions they have heard. Read on to learn about ways to ease their fears.

Misconceptions About Going to the Dentist:

Children are Scared

There is a common belief that children are supposed to be scared of the dentist. One way to eliminate this possibility is by taking your little one to a pediatric dentist. When you take your child to a children’s dentist, the visit can actually be enjoyable! Pediatric dental offices are tailored to fit a child’s needs. At Great Grins Children’s Dentistry, we have movies, toys, books, and plenty of activities for children to feel comfortable.

Brushing Does Not Make a Difference

It is important to develop good oral hygiene habits at an early age. This includes brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. Your child’s brushing should be supervised until they are old enough to do correctly on their own. Be sure to encourage proper brushing so that dental visits are less scary.

Type of Brush Doesn’t Matter

One of the biggest dental misconceptions is in regards to the type of toothbrush a child uses. Everything from the size to the color of a toothbrush can change a child’s oral habits. Choose a toothbrush that they are comfortable with.

Finding the Right Children’s Dentist

When choosing a children’s dentist, you’ll want to make sure that you find one that meets your specifications. Your child should be comfortable with this person and the dentist should have kid-specific training. Consider the following things before selecting a dentist to ensure that your child has the best possible experience.

Friendly People
Before everything else, choose a dentist that is nice to your child. Dental visits inherently cause nervousness in children and if the dentist is not understanding of this, problems are sure to arise. Every person who works in the office should be friendly and accommodating to your child because they care!

Clean Office
Find a children’s dentist that does take hygiene seriously. The office should be completely spotless because this shows how seriously the staff takes its job. You might even want to ask some questions about how the office sterilizes its instruments, just to make sure that your child will be properly taken care of during every visit.

The Atmosphere
Dentists that create a fun and light atmosphere are able to offer children a better overall experience. If your child has a positive experience, you might be surprised when he actually wants to go back to the dentist again. Children’s dentists like Dr. Wolfman and Dr. Lele at Great Grins Children’s Dentistry do an outstanding job of catering to children and creating an environment that children enjoy. Kid’s Dentist Tucson, Arizona

A child’s dental health is just as important as an adults. A pediatric dentist specializes in dental care for children. They usually care for a child’s teeth from the eruption of the first teeth up to age 18. Since this is a long period, it is important to find a pediatric dentist that your child is comfortable with. They should also provide all of the services that you think your child will need.

Kid’s Dentist Tucson: Education

One of the most valuable services that a dentist can provide is education. At Great Grins Children’s Dentistry, Dr. Kedar Lele and Dr. Angela Wolfman explain dental health to both parents and patients thoroughly. This education is important because it helps children to properly care for their teeth and gums between dentist visits. Learning about their dental health can help children avoid cavities and costly fillings in the future.

Dental Cleanings

Your kid’s dentist will provide a professional cleaning during regular check ups. This is necessary to remove plaque and other bacteria that may have built up between appointments. Your child should see a dentist every six months, or more frequently in some cases. Read these FAQs about dental cleanings for little ones for more information.

Repairs

It is not uncommon for children or even adults to have cavities. This will lead to needed repairs such as a cavity being filled or a chip being fixed. Sealants can help prevent cavities, but the most important and effective way is to brush and floss every day. Preventative dental care is a lot less costly than getting teeth fixed.

Teeth Whitening for Children

Having white teeth and a bright smile is important to many people, especially teenagers. As a result of this interest, many oral hygiene companies have introduced over-the-counter tooth whitening products. These can be used without a prescription or a visit to the dentist. If your child is considering these products, keep in mind that they are not suitable for children under the age of 14. They can cause a great deal of discomfort even in adults. Once the pulp of a person’s teeth has fully formed, whitening becomes safer for teens.

Teeth Whitening Options

Perhaps the most common type of teeth whitening comes in the form of whitening toothpastes. These items help remove stains from the surface of the teeth with a special chemical. One thing to remember is that unlike bleaching agents, this toothpaste does not change the natural color of the person’s teeth. Therefore, it is recommended that teens use whitening toothpaste ahead of bleach. If your teen wishes to bleach his/her teeth, make sure that they see a pediatric dentist first. It is a good idea to get some more information on the effects it may have.

Preventative Actions

The best alternative to teeth whitening bleaches or toothpastes is to avoid staining teeth. This can be achieved with good oral hygiene and a healthy diet. Avoiding things like coffee, tea, and nicotine can prevent the teeth from yellowing. Be sure to brush after every meal or beverage as well, especially at bedtime. Visiting a children’s dentist on a regular basis also goes a long way towards keeping a bright and healthy smile.

See a Pediatric Dentist

It is always a good idea to see a dentist before using any teeth whitening products that may cause sensitivity in your child’s teeth. Looking for a pediatric dentist in Tucson? At Great Grins Children’s Dentistry, our dentists are board certified and they specialize in dental care for infants, children, and teens, including those with special needs. Kid’s Dentist in Tucson

Visiting a kid’s dentist early on is very important. Baby teeth determine the overall dental development of a child, as they aid the child’s ability to speak and chew. These teeth are also responsible for helping to shape the child’s face and creating space for the adult teeth that will come later. When a young child suffers from tooth decay, it is essential that they see a kid’s dentist before it leads to long term developmental problems.

Risks of Tooth Decay

When a child loses his/her baby teeth at a young age, it could prevent the adult teeth from coming in properly. In some cases, this leads to crooked or misplaced teeth in adulthood. Therefore, it is in the child’s best interests to have the baby teeth saved, even in cases where tooth decay is present. If the child does happen to lose a baby tooth, most pediatric dentists will recommend using a spacer to fill the void.

Fixing Tooth Decay

Visiting a kid’s dentist is a great way to prevent tooth decay. Once a tooth begins to decay, however, treatment is necessary to save it. When left untreated, the tooth could cause pain to the child and damage the adult teeth that are developing beneath the gum line. Your dentist can fill these baby teeth to ensure that they don’t become large problems for your child in the future. A child may also need a crown for a tooth with more decay.

Can You See Cavities?

There are plenty of myths regarding oral care that you might have heard over the years. It is important to learn as much as possible about proper dental care at home in order to avoid bigger problems. Regular dental visits, usually every six months, are necessary in order to insure that the teeth are properly taken care of. Read below to learn about some common misconceptions and why visiting a dentist is so important.

Can You See Cavities?

Many people grow up thinking that you’ll know for sure if you have a cavity because it will hurt. Another common misconception is that you can see cavities with the naked eye. This is not the case, as many cavities cannot be seen or felt at all. Therefore, even if your child hasn’t complained about a sore tooth, it is still important that he/she see a children’s dentist at regular intervals. The only way to tell if cavities are present is to receive a full examination and possibly take x-rays at a dental office.

Fillings Have to be Replaced
Some believe that fillings will eventually have to get replaced, but this is not true if a proper dental routine is followed. Be sure that your children brush their teeth at least two times a day and floss daily.

Babies Don’t Get Cavities
Children of any age are prone to cavities. Can you see cavities in babies? Babies can actually get bacteria from the mother’s mouth and are some times more prone to decay due to bottle feeding. It is important to take your child to the dentist as soon as their first tooth arrives, and no later than their first birthday. Call Great Grins Children’s Dentistry at (520) 325-4746 to make your child’s first appointment and learn more about dental health!
