Oral Sedation: Treatment Options For Your Child

Oral sedation helps to calm nerves and ensure a good dental visit. At Great Grin’s Children’s Dentistry, we love working with children. We also understand that it’s normal for them to feel overwhelmed sometimes. Our friendly staff treats every patient as our own family. Because of this, we want your child to feel comfortable at every appointment!

We offer three types of sedation to meet every child’s needs. These include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and office-based or hospital-based anesthesia. Do you have trouble calming your child for dental visits? Does your child need a lot of treatment? Then these options can help!

Nitrous Oxide

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes laughing gas as a safe option for children. It is non-addictive and effective. It is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. This helps your child relax while remaining conscious. Your child will be in control of all reflexes.

Oral Sedation

In addition to laughing gas, we also offer oral sedation. It will help your child relax while remaining conscious. It can cause drowsiness, so your child may fall asleep for a nap.

Office-Based Anesthesia

Office-based anesthesia is another option. This is I.V. sedation must be administered through the vein by our anesthesiologist. The patient is completely asleep and will have no recollection of the event. This is the best option for a child that needs a lot of dental work done.

Hospital-Based Sedation

In some cases, we can also perform hospital-based sedation. This is done under general anesthesia. It may require a stay in the hospital if your child has certain medical needs.

Nitrous Oxide/Dental Laughing Gas

Nitrous Oxide Benefits

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is a safe sedative that helps you relax. At Great Grin’s Children’s Dentistry, this is one of the most common types of oral sedation we provide.

Should My Child Receive Laughing Gas?

Many children feel anxious in unfamiliar places and feel scared at the dentist. Our goal is to help even the most anxious child feel at ease during the appointment. We encourage you to talk with your child about their upcoming visit to our office. Try to prepare them for the services they’ll receive. If they still show extreme nervousness and anxiety, dental nitrous oxide may be helpful for them. For some cases and children with special needs, we also offer office- and hospital-based anesthesia.

How Nitrous Oxide Works

Here is more information on how laughing gas works. At the beginning of the appointment, we will place a small nose piece over your child’s nose. As they breathe normally, the gas will take effect, making your child feel more relaxed. Experiencing a light-headed feeling or a tingling in the arms and legs is normal. It will not put your child to sleep. Your child will be conscious and be able to respond to any directions we may give throughout the appointment. Our doctors then administer oxygen through the nose piece when the treatment is done. This allows the effects of nitrous oxide to wear off right away.

Nitrous Oxide in Tucson Office

Throughout the years, we’ve found that children respond well to laughing gas. It can make your child feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Our goal is to ensure every child receives dental treatment comfortably and safely. Laughing gas is easy to administer, and children love the feeling of comfort it provides. Still have questions about laughing gas and your child’s appointment? Contact our office today at (520)325-4746 for more information!

X-Rays: Are They Safe for Children?

Dental X-Rays: What Are They For?

Dental x-rays allow dentists to get an inside look at your child’s teeth and jaw to find issues they are unable to see with the naked eye. Cavities can form between teeth, and x-rays help dentists find them. Some children or adults have extra teeth or are more likely to need braces in the future. X-rays allow dentists to see this. So, how safe are they? Read below to learn more about radiographs and their uses.

Are X-Rays Safe?

Yes—in moderation. According to the American Dental Association (ADA) and The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the amount of radiation we’re exposed to from dental x-rays over the course of our lifetimes is minuscule. The average radiation dose in the U.S. is 6.2 millisieverts (mSv) per year. Only about 3.1 mSv come from natural sources and approximately 3.1 mSv from man-made sources. Roughly half of the man-made radiation exposure is related to CT scanning.*

State laws also set requirements for using radiation. At Great Grin’s children’s dentistry, we comply with all laws and regulations regarding the use and frequency of dental x-rays. We use digital, low-dose radiation x-rays to make them as safe as possible!

Kid’s Dentist in Tucson

In short, the benefits of your child getting a dental x-ray far outweigh the risks. Undetected problems can worsen over time. This can lead to pain and bigger problems in the future. The longer you wait for decay to be treated, the more costly it can be. Dr. Angela Wolfman and Dr. Kedar Lele are happy to answer any questions regarding your child’s dental health. Call Great Grins Children’s Dentistry in Tucson, AZ at (520)325-4746. Whether you have a question regarding insurance, dental x-rays, or appointment scheduling, we are happy to help!

Your Infant’s First Dentist Trip: as Easy as 123!

Is it time for your child’s first dental appointment?

If you are feeling anxious about your baby’s first dentist trip, don’t worry! At Great Grins Children’s Dentistry, it is our priority to make sure your baby has a good visit. We perform a knee-to-knee exam for babies to ensure a calmer, less overwhelming trip to the dentist.

If you have been looking for a dentist in Tucson, Dr. Wolfman and Dr. Lele are board certified pediatric dentists that specialize in children’s dental needs.

First Dentist Trip: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3!

At Great Grins Children’s Dentistry, we train our team to work with children. There are also some simple ways to ensure your infant has a great first dentist trip. To prepare, just remember these three easy steps!

1. Begin by holding your child in your lap with their head in another person’s lap. This will help your baby practice this position before the dental appointment.
2. Then, gently wash your child’s mouth and gums with a wash cloth or infant toothbrush.
3. Finally, remember to remain calm so that your little one will be happy, too!

As pediatric dentists, we know little ones can be unpredictable. Even the most prepared child can get overwhelmed and cry. However, if you show that you’re stressed, it will make it harder to calm your child down as well. We are here to help you and your child relax and be as comfortable as possible throughout the exam.

Because babies’ needs are very different from an adults’, it is important to find a pediatric dentist for your little one. This will also help them when they are children and then teenagers! If you have any questions on how to prepare your child for the first visit, contact our office at 520-325-4746!

Kid’s Dentistry in Tucson AZ: Dental Laser for Kids

Kid’s dentistry is constantly evolving. There are new techniques that help dentists take better care of your teeth while minimizing discomfort. As technology improves, your children’s dentist in Tucson finds new ways to provide a better experience for your child. Some improvements we’ll be seeing in the coming years include:

Laser Dentistry

Dental lasers use water and light technology to improve the patient experience. Also known as “no-shot” dentistry, it allows for little to no anesthetics! Dental lasers are so precise that there is less trauma to surrounding areas. There is less bleeding and swelling. One of the best parts is that there is no vibration, pressure, or heat from a drill when the laser is used alone!

Dr. Wolfman and Dr. Lele at Great Grins Children’s Dentistry like to stay up-to-date with technology improvements. Because of this, they use laser dentistry. As a result, our patients have a better experience in our office! We are happy to offer a service that not only allows for more precise work, but also gives our patients peace of mind.

New Anesthetics

Another aspect that we could see improve is the use of anesthetics. This will come in handy at the children’s dentist in Tucson, since milder sedatives will allow for faster recovery. The idea is to make major surgeries as comfortable as possible for those involved without adding to the risk of the procedure.

Healthy Teeth: Tips From a Kid’s Dentist

Who doesn’t want healthy teeth? We all want our children to have good oral health. Taking care of our babies’ teeth is a great way to prevent cavities and dental injuries. Read on to learn some tips from our Tucson pediatric dentists. You can also visit this page by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for some frequently asked questions and their answers!

Healthy Teeth: Supervise Brushing

Supervise your children’s brushing until they are old enough to brush properly. Even when they are able to brush by themselves, double check to make sure all areas were cleaned. This will help ensure that they are not using too much toothpaste, swallowing toothpaste, or skipping flossing. Stress the importance of brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. One way to encourage healthy teeth is by getting a fun toothbrush and toothpaste.

Mouth Guards

Always make your child wears a mouth guard when participating in a contact sport. This will help protect the mouth and could save you hundreds of dollars in dental work! Custom mouth guards work best because they are formed to your child’s mouth. Mouth guards can provide much needed protection.

Regular Check Ups

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your baby visit a dentist no later than age one or six months after their first tooth erupts. After the first visit, your child should see a dentist every six months. This will ensure a lifetime of healthy teeth and cavity prevention! Make dental visits a routine for your child so that they know the importance. They may even come to like visiting the dentist if it is a fun, kid’s office.

Great Grins Children’s Dentistry is located in Tucson, AZ. Our board certified pediatric dentists specialize in dentistry for infants, children, and teens, including those with special needs. Call today to schedule an appointment at (520)325-4746!
